'RNWY Universe' A Utopian 24th Century Where People No Longer Age
Pablo A. Lopez takes us to the year 2399. Humans' "biological clocks" have been stopped for more than 250 years, freeing humanity from aging and death. AIs have rights, and can even acquire full citizenship.
It’s also fashion week. Antisocial fashion editor Pablo Starr — who runs Space Fashion Week, via RNWY — is bored and depressed, as usual. He has endless riches, and (like everyone in 2399) doesn't age, but he's been searching for his lost love for almost 100 years.
Meanwhile, supermodel-turned-reality star Samantha (of mean-spirited holo show Samantha!) is trying to make a name for herself as an inventor, but she's mocked by the media and her shallow co-workers.
Their lives are connected, and changed, when DOS, an antiquated robot, crashes the Chanel show looking for Samantha.
DOS has a wild story: his owner has been abducted by a Sention sim (a lifelike android made by Fashion Robotics), and Pablo will be next.
US Lifestyle speaks to Pablo A. Lopez the creator of RNWY Universe
What is RNWY Universe? And when can we expect to experience it?
Pablo:
RNWY is a novel and a screenplay. It’s set in a utopian but shallow 24th century where people no longer age, and attend fashion week all over the solar system, including in virtual reality. It’s also kind of funny.
It involves four characters struggling to find their place in this future world, with its own particular sets of challenges. They struggle with loneliness, and purpose, just like we do. In some ways, more so.
The screenplay is complete and currently being shopped.
How is it different from your other well known projects?
Pablo:
It’s basically my return to creative writing after many years “away,” either playing music (I was in bands in New Orleans and L.A. for many years), or creating Fashion Week Online.
Has your approach for this project changed after experiencing the global pandemic?
Pablo:
Not much! I do get a lot more writing done, haha. I would say it makes me crave the future world in my book even more than I did before, which is really saying something.
The world of RNWY, for all its flaws, is fundamentally kind and egalitarian.
How have your travels helped you define your personal US lifestyle? What is the most impactful change you have made to your way of living or your approach to style?
Pablo:
Visiting countries like Ecuador and Kenya have made me appreciate the incredible wealth we take for granted in the United States.
Tell us about the characters and the how they unfold.
Pablo:
Samantha — an inventor — is the main character. She’s brilliant, fierce, loyal and loving, no-nonsense, and kick ass.
Who worked with you on characterization and individual characters styling?
Pablo:
I styled them in the book, and directed the graphic design, although some incredible artists brought the concepts to life.
What organization would you like our readers to support and why
Pablo:
There are tons of great causes! It’s important that everyone “fight” for the ones closest to them.
How do you see fashion presentations evolve post-COVID?
Pablo:
In the immediate future, more live streams. In five years, virtual reality! But one thing I’ve learned is that everyone loves a REAL show.
Once we all have stylish N95 masks, or something similar, we should be able to get back to it. :)
Obviously we’ll wait to see what the medical experts say, but I think — when the time comes — we’ve got this.
